Eric Sorrentino (Sports copy editor)

Eric came to Kansas from Plano, Texas, where he attended Plano West Senior High School. He also previously lived in Coral Springs, Fla., and was born in Poughkeepsie, N.Y.

Eric attended Kansas University, where he graduated from the School of Journalism in 2006.


He worked for the Journal-World part-time, covering Free State High athletics, from May 2006 to May 2007, when he moved to Tonganoxie to become sports editor of The Mirror, one of The World Company's weekly newspapers. In February 2008, Eric re-joined the Journal-World as a sports copy editor. He also produces the Big 12 Spotlight feature in the sports section on Wednesdays.

Eric considers family - his brother David, who attends the University of Arizona, his mother Debbi and his father Ralph - the most important parts of his life.

In his spare time, Eric likes to watch the Texas Rangers online, shoot threes in the Journal-World's pick-up games and listen to music. Some of his favorite bands include Fair to Midland, Metallica, Sevendust, Avenged Sevenfold and AFI.

At long last, the wait is over. Kind of a lengthy wait, too, for college football fans. Big 12 supporters who watched their teams play in bowl games last season endured roughly eight months without football. Essentially, it’s the longest wait in sports. Not to worry, though: College football season is only three days away for most Big 12 fans; one day away for the Baylor and Iowa State faithful.

All due respect to Nebraska, Colorado, Kansas State, Iowa State, Oklahoma State, Texas A&M and Baylor: It’s just not going to happen this year. However, the conference looks as powerful as it’s been since 2001, when the Associated Press ranked four Big 12 teams in the top 10.

Gale Sayers sat at a table Thursday afternoon in the Sprint Center’s Founder’s Room, reminiscing about one of the most memorable athletic years in the history of Kansas University. He looked sharp, sporting a black suit with silver pinstripes. He spoke softly, with several hints of passion for his alma mater, which won the Orange Bowl and the national championship in basketball in the same academic year.

While most Big 12 football teams have junior-college transfers sprinkled across their rosters, Kansas State has started a trend in the conference. Forget the traditional method of bringing in juco transfers to plug a hole or two. Coach Ron Prince now has enough juco players to revamp the entire team.
