DeSoto — Shooting percentages suffered from a chilling effect at the finals of the DeSoto Tournament on Thursday night. The biggest victim of the cold snap appeared to be Eudora High’s boys basketball team. The Cardinals dropped their first game of the season as an icy shooting display cost the team a 66-42 loss to Spring Hill in the tournament’s championship game.
EUDORA BOYS ROCK MCLOUTH

A slow start couldn’t derail Eudora High’s boys basketball team Friday night against McLouth. After an abysmal first-quarter performance that saw the Cardinals miss 11 of 16 shots, commit nine turnovers and post nearly as many fouls (10) as points (11), Eudora rebounded with a 21-point third quarter to take control. The final result was a 69-49 win for Eudora in its season opener.

The move up for Haskell Indian Nations University’s men’s basketball team hasn’t been an easy one. Facing its sixth National Intercollegiate Athletic Association opponent of the season Tuesday, Haskell fell once again as Baker University won 98-70 at the Collins Center. The loss dropped Haskell to 0-6 on the season as it continues to struggle through its trial run at the NAIA level.

Baldwin — Preseason expectations haven’t exactly been a burden for Baker University’s women’s basketball team. Tabbed dead last out of 10 teams in the Heart of America Athletic Conference preseason coaches’ poll, the Wildcats have responded by jumping out to their best start in school history.

Complications aside, tonight’s regular-season finale means everything to Baker University’s football team. A win today over No. 13 Missouri Valley (8-2) in Marshall, Mo., would allow the No. 24-ranked Wildcats (6-3) to claim a share of the Heart of America Athletic Conference title for the first time since 1993.

Baldwin — Rick Weaver doesn’t mince words when describing his 1999-2000 Baker University men’s basketball squad. With no returner averaging more than 15 points-per-game and a smallish lineup that could include three players 6-foot-2 or smaller at times, Weaver doesn’t exactly fancy his team to be an offensive powerhouse as it enters today’s season opener.
