Miles announces recruiting-focused support staff additions

Kansas safety Bryce Torneden (1) gets a hug from defensive analyst Dirk Wedd, who recently retired as long time Lawrence High head coach, after Torneden's interception and touchdown during the first quarter on Saturday, Sept. 15, 2018 at Memorial Stadium.

Fresh off his first signing class as head football coach at the University of Kansas, Les Miles announced Monday some more additions to his support staff that figure to help the Jayhawks on the never-ending recruiting front.

Miles announced that Dirk Wedd will move from an analyst job to director of high school relations, while Drew Hixson has been hired as KU’s director of scouting.

Entering his second season with KU football, Wedd, the longtime Lawrence High head coach, spent 2018 as a defensive analyst for the Jayhawks. He’ll now focus on facilitating relationships between high school programs and the KU football team.

Wedd coached the Chesty Lions for 19 years before retiring at the conclusion of the 2017 season.

Back when Wichita State had a football program, Wedd was an assistant there from 1978-85.

His football coaching career got started at Pratt Community College, where he was an assistant from 1975-78.

Hixson will be responsible for identifying and evaluating prospects at KU, while assisting the football program’s recruiting staff.

In 2018, Hixson worked on the support staff with Virginia’s football program, with a focus on recruiting efforts.

Hixson first got involved at the college level at Georgia, where he spent two years working in the recruiting office before graduating in 2017.
