A pair area teams took home some hardware, earning wins on the final day of the high school basketball season.

Both the Baldwin girls basketball team and Perry-Lecompton earned third-place finishes in their respective state tournament Saturday afternoon. Of the six area teams who earned state berths this week, BHS and PLHS were the only two squads to move past the opening round.

Baldwin recorded a 52-37 win over Nickerson during the Class 4A state tournament at Tony’s Pizza Events Center in Salina. Perry-Lecompton netted a 57-49 victory over Thomas More Prep in the Class 3A state tournament at Hutchinson Community College.

For the second consecutive year, Baldwin (21-2) played on the final day of the season. This time, however, a state crown was not on the line.

The Bulldogs, who won a state title in Class 4A-II last year, jumped out to a 10-4 lead in the first quarter of Saturday’s third-place match. BHS then outscored Nickerson in the second and fourth period to cruise to a 15-point win.

A pair of Baldwin players finished in double figures in the victory. Senior Macey Frost scored 14 points to lead the way in her last game as a Bulldog. Lindsay Toot also scored 11 points. Seniors Kate Ogle and Kayla Kurtz finished with 9 and 8 points, respectively.
