Free State's Noah Butler (24) scrambles for a loose ball during the Firebirds' game against the Lawrence in the City Showdown on Dec. 26, 2017 in Allen Fieldhouse. The 2019 installment of the City Showdown, which was slated for Tuesday night, has been cancelled due to inclement weather.

Due to inclement weather, the Lawrence school district has canceled all athletic events for Tuesday night, including the basketball doubleheader between Lawrence High and Free State. A makeup date has not been announced yet.

The City Showdown was scheduled to take place at Allen Fieldhouse for the third consecutive season, with the girls game kicking the doubleheader off at 6 p.m. The Lawrence High girls basketball team has won the previous five meetings with Free State.

Free State’s boys basketball team won last year’s meeting in Allen Fieldhouse, snapping an eight-game losing streak to LHS. Both teams are ranked in the top-10 in the latest poll by the Kansas Basketball Coaches Association. The Lions (9-1) are No. 2 in Class 6A, while the Firebirds (8-2) are No. 9 in Class 6A.

All four teams are slated to be back in action this week. The Free State girls (3-6) will host their midseason tournament starting with an opening-round game against Hutchinson at 6 p.m. Thursday.

LHS boys will play host to Wyandotte at 7 p.m. Wednesday, while FSHS boys will travel to Mill Valley at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday. The Lawrence girls (6-4) will travel to JC Harmon at 5:30 p.m. Thursday.
