Senior bowlers shine during last City Showdown

Lawrence High senior Ashley Dykes picks up a spare during the City Showdown Thursday at Royal Crest Lanes on Feb. 14, 2019.

Lawrence High senior Ashley Dykes couldn’t have asked for a better ending.

In her final game on Senior Night, Dykes made the most of it by putting together her best game of the year. Dykes began the game off with a four strikes in as many frames, which even warranted high fives from Free State seniors Lexie Lockwood and Sydney Jordan.

Dykes finished with a 245, netting eight strikes in her third game to give her a series score of 570. Both were season highs for Dykes, who claimed the top individual spot in the varsity girls competition Thursday night at Royal Crest Lanes.

“I was hoping to do well on Senior Day, because it is our last (event) before regionals,” Dykes said. “A lot of my family came, so it was nice to do well in front of them.”

The LHS girls bowling team finished with a total score of 2,073 to defeat Free State (1,910) in the City Showdown. On the boys side, FSHS recorded a team score of 2,358 to best Lawrence High’s mark of 2,141.

But Thursday’s tilt between two city teams was a chance to recognize talented seniors from both programs.

Free State senior Bayn Schrader was the top individual boys bowler, posting a series score of 645 to take the win. Lorenzo Dan, who is the lone senior for the LHS boys team, claimed fourth with a series score of 552. His teammate, Rhett May, took third with a 581. FSHS bowlers Joey Taylor (615) and A.J. Baker (534) finished second and fifth, respectively.

“I could have done better in my second game,” Schrader said. “I tied my high series for the year, so I’m not upset.”

Meanwhile, Free State senior Raegan Finkeldei posted a career-best performance in front of all her friends and family. She finished with a series score of 522, her first mark over 500 in her four-year bowling career.

“That was my best series ever by 29 pins,” Finkeldei said. “I was motivated all night by having all my friends and family here. It was important to not embarrass myself.”

Finkeldei’s performance was only behind Dykes and Emile Rodman, who placed second with a series score of 542 for the Lions. Lana Chieu of Lawrence placed fourth with a 483 series score, while Jordan came in fifth with a 472.

“I always enjoy the City Dual,” Finkeldei said. “It shows a positive environment, both teams are encouraging each other. I think that really helps us do well.”

Both teams will compete in regionals on Feb. 22 at West Ridge Lanes.
