LHS girls end losing skid with win over Shawnee Mission South

Lawrence junior Ella Stewart (10) gives a high five to her teammate Sophie DeWitt (14) in a game Thursday, Feb. 14, 2019 at Shawnee Mission South.

OVERLAND PARK – The losing skid is over for the Lawrence High girls basketball team.

Lawrence took down Shawnee Mission South, 45-43, on the road Thursday night. With the win, the Lions (10-8, 5-5 Sunflower League) snapped a 3-game losing streak.

After opening the game on a 15-12 deficit, Ella Stewart scored a 3-pointer to give the Lions a lead in the second quarter. The Lions then led by as much as 8 points during the third quarter, and never trailed from that moment on.

“This is an extremely tough place to play, (and) those kids play really really hard,” LHS coach Jeff Dickson said. “We were in that situation again where we were getting a little tight, and we were able to make some tremendous defensive stops and hit enough free throws to pull it out.”

Stewart and Chisom Ajekwu led the Lions with 10 points. Sammy Williams scored 9 points on three field goals and three makes from the charity stripe. Williams dominated the glass for the Lions with 12 boards.

Rallying back from an injury after being tabbed one of the Lions’ best players, Dickson looks forward to seeing Stewart continue to have nights like Thursday.

“Last couple of games, she’s starting to look like herself again and I think she was growing on both ends of the floor,’ Dickson said of Stewart. “Defensively, she plays with so much heart and passion. She’s a great shooter, (and) she’s a special player. We don’t win that game without her.”

Sophie DeWitt netted a pair of 3-pointers. Four other Lions were able to make shots beyond the arc with Layla Harjo, Leslie Ostronic, Ella Stewart and Hannah Stewart joining the mix.

Ostronic and Hannah Stewart were able to limit a Raiders (6-12, 5-7) to a 6-for-27 effort from long range.

Evann Seratte grabbed two rebounds in eight minutes of play and Lexi Dutcher saw the floor with the Lions in foul trouble in the fourth quarter. Lacey Whitcomb and Liz Crawford led the Raiders with 11 points each.

Lawrence will play host to Olathe Northwest at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday.
