Lions avoid any hangover with convincing win over Cougars

Lawrence High senior Clarence King (3) shoots over the Shawnee Mission Northwest defense Tuesday night on Feb. 12, 2019.

SHAWNEE — Any concern of a hangover for the Lawrence High boys basketball team was quickly put to bed Tuesday night at Shawnee Mission Northwest.

Lawrence never trailed, scoring 8 unanswered points in the first 143 seconds of the contest. It wasn’t long before the Lions led by double digits, as they rolled to a 89-56 victory over the Cougars Tuesday night.

The prolific all-around performance came just one night after LHS (No. 5 in Class 6A) took down Free State in the City Showdown.

“We had good energy and, defensively, we were sound,” Lawrence head coach Mike Lewis said. “We came out and hit some early momentum shots, and fed off that momentum. I liked the way we shared it, and we came out and took care of business.”

It is quite the response by Lawrence, as the two double-digit victories in as many days occurred right after the team was upset by Shawnee Mission West last Friday.

“I think we are just trying to build momentum heading into the postseason,” senior Trey Quartlebaum said. “We want to win games we are supposed to win. For Friday’s loss, we felt like we could have won, so we don’t want that to happen.”

Sophomore Zeke Mayo got the ball rolling for the Lions (14-3, 7-2 Sunflower League) in the road affair. He scored 8 quick points, including consecutive triples with a defender draped all over him.

But that was merely the start of dominance, as Shawnee Mission Northwest (5-11, 2-8) had no answer.

Senior Clarence King, who was coming off a 36-point performance against FSHS, scored 6 points at the end of the first period. Senior Brett Chapple and sophomore Mayson Quartlebaum also got in the scoring action, as the Lions claimed a 22-13 advantage after the opening period.

Trey Quartlebaum broke the game open, connecting on a trio of 3-pointers in the second period. Lawrence led by a 47-25 margin at the intermission, and the game was pretty much a wrap after that.

“Defensive stops were the key,” Trey said. “We wanted to come out and focus on getting stops.”

Just like it would have been easy to suffer from a hangover against the Cougars, it also would have been just as easy for the Lions to let up in the second half.

Instead, Lewis leaned on his bench to help put a stamp on things. Junior Bryce Johnson netted four buckets in traffic. In addition, juniors Ethan Bentzinger and Peyton Mallory each tallied a late basket for the Lions, as well.

Trey paced LHS with 19 points, though he had plenty of help in the offensive clinic. King finished with 18 points, while Mayo scored 17 points. Mayson Quartlebaum was the fourth Lion to net double figures, finishing with 16 points.

“I thought our guys were zoned in,” Lewis said. “Our subs came in, and did a nice job. We didn’t miss a beat. It is just a feel-good win for the group.”

Lawrence travels to Shawnee Mission South at 7 p.m. Friday.
