KU golf starts season with 2nd place finish at Badger Invitational

With top-20 finishes from sophomore Harry Hillier, junior Andy Spencer, redshirt sophomore Drew Shepherd and sophomore Ben Sigel, the University of Kansas men’s golf team placed second at the Badger Invitational Tuesday to open the 2018-19 season.

Kansas posted a team score of 5-under (859), falling just short of tourney champ Illinois State’s 9-under (855). Iowa State and Nevada tied for third in the 12-team field at 863.

Hillier tied for seventh with a 213 (-3) to mark the first top-10 finish of his Kansas career. Spencer, who finished second at last season’s Badger Invitational, shot even par for the tournament (216) and ultimately tied for 11th out of 78 golfers.

“Harry played well today and for the week,” Kansas head coach Jamie Bermel said in a team release. “He made a couple of sloppy bogeys, but hung in there for the most part. It was good to see Andy have a good day. He got off to a slow start on some tough opening holes for him, but showed a lot of maturity and battled back.”

Kansas returns to action Sept. 24-25 for the Shoal Creek Intercollegiate in Birmingham, Ala.
