Area roundup: Seahawks start season off with 2 wins

Bishop Seabury’s boys basketball team picked up a pair of wins in its first two games of the season.

The Seahawks played on consecutive days, starting with a 75-29 home victory over St. Mary’s Thursday and then claiming a 63-56 win at Hanover on Friday. Entering the season, Bishop Seabury was the No. 4 team in Class 2A via the preseason coaches poll, while Hanover was listed at No. 2 in 1A.

Stavian Jones and Zach Bloch each had 18 points to lead Bishop Seabury to a victory over a ranked foe Friday. Luke Hornberger dominated the glass to lift the Seahawks to their second consecutive victory.

Meanwhile, Cobe Green paced the Seahawks in the season opener with a career-high 26 points.

Veritas 63, Heritage Christian 38

The Veritas boys basketball team started the year off with a 63-38 win over Heritage Christian.

Tucker Flory led the team with 21 points in 24 minutes, hitting 10 of his 15 shot attempts in the win. Trey Huslig added 12 points for the Eagles, while Scott Weinhold chipped in 11 points in the season opener.

Veritas jumped out to a 15-4 advantage in the first period before adding a 22-point outburst in the second quarter to pull away.

Eudora 54, Basehor-Linwood 47

Eudora’s girls basketball team took care of business in the season opener, claiming a 54-47 win over Basehor-Linwood.

Basehor-Linwood jumped out to a 20-16 advantage in the first period before Eudora added 15 points in the second quarter and 17 in the final period. Riley Hiebert and Harper Schreiner each added 18 points for the Cardinals. Reagan Hiebert finished with 13 points.

Eudora will compete in the Paola Invitational next week, which begins Monday.
