Sound Off: Recycling batteries
Where can a person recycle household batteries?
All types of household batteries can be recycled or disposed of through the City of Lawrence/Douglas County Household Hazardous Waste Facility. The batteries are sorted by type and recycled or sent to a hazardous waste landfill. Alkaline batteries go to a hazardous waste landfill, as the cost of recycling is currently cost-prohibitive for the program. Rechargeable batteries are recycled. Other locations that accept rechargeable batteries for recycling can be found at www.LawrenceRecycles.org. The City of Lawrence/Douglas County Household Hazardous Waste Facility operates on an appointment-only basis. To schedule a drop-off, call 785-832-3030. There is no drop-off charge for households in Douglas County. Qualifying businesses and nonprofit organizations may use the Business Hazardous Waste Program for fee-based disposal options.
