Sound off: Frozen turkey

Can I safely cook a frozen turkey without thawing it first?

Yes, according to the Mayo Clinic. But with a few restrictions. You can cook it in the oven, but don’t grill, smoke, microwave or deep-fry a frozen turkey. It takes longer to cook a frozen turkey. According to the USDA, take the recommended cooking time for a thawed turkey and add 50 percent of that time to the original time. Whether it is cooked frozen or thawed, the temperature inside a stuffed turkey must reach 165 degrees Fahrenheit to be safe for consumption. Another tip: Remove the giblets with tongs or forks when the turkey has sufficiently defrosted during cooking.
