Sound Off: Bicycle license

Why doesn’t the city require bicycle riders to have licenses and charge fees to help with road markings and signage?

The city of Lawrence does not require bicycle riders to be licensed. Some Kansas municipalities do have ordinances requiring cyclists to register their bikes, but larger cities, such as Wichita and Topeka, have repealed bicycle registration laws. Police have said enforcing bicycle licenses in Lawrence would cost more than it would generate in fees.
