Sound Off: Party Change

How does one change a political party affiliation in Douglas County?

According to Douglas County Clerk Jamie Shew, voters change their party affiliation by filling out a new voter registration card and changing their affiliation on the card. They can do it either online — forms are available on the county website, www.douglas-county.com — or at various locations in the county where county business is conducted. Party affiliation must be changed by the registration deadline prior to an election. Voters cannot change party affiliation on Election Day during a primary, but unaffiliated voters can declare an affiliation on Election Day. Shew said the Kansas Legislature is considering legislation that would change the rules on how and when voters can change their party affiliations. He said those bills have not yet passed, but are still active.
