Sound Off: Compost sale
When’s the next compost sale?
This spring the city will hold compost and wood chip sales at the city’s Wood Recovery and Composting Facility, 1420 E. 11th St. (east of 11th and Haskell Avenue, near the railroad tracks). • Self-load only compost and wood chip sale: 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. March 30. ($10 per truck load; small quantities free; bring a shovel). • Compost: 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. April 4, 5 and 6 (or until the supply is depleted). City will load trucks and trailers. Cost: $10 per bucket load/two cubic yards. • Wood chip: 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. April 11, 12, 13 (or until the supply is depleted). City will load trucks and trailers. Cost: $10 per bucket load/two cubic yards. Other things to remember: • The sales will be held rain or shine. • The city will accept cash payments only. • Compost and wood chips are intended only for the residents of Lawrence and not for commercial uses. • Dump truck quantities are not allowed. • The city cannot load trucks with ladder racks. One year when I went I met a dumptruck with the name of a local landscape and lawn care company on the side pulling out fully loaded with compost.

Is this compost safe? I always wonder about pesticides and such from peoples lawn clippings that go into the compost.

I heard it's mixed with runoff from the snow that melted from treated streets.
