Sound Off: Health violation

In Monday’s GO! story about Hilary’s Eat Well (July 8), there’s a picture of them in their new facility. Everybody has on hairnets but they also have open-toed shoes. Isn’t that a health violation to work around food and not have close-toed shoes?

From a food safety standpoint, the Kansas Food Code has no requirement for closed-toed shoes at food manufacturers. From an employee safety standpoint, the Occupational and Health Administration requires employers to “ensure that each affected employee uses protective footwear when working in areas where there is a danger of foot injuries due to falling or rolling objects, or objects piercing the sole, and where such employee’s feet are exposed to electrical hazards.”
