Sound Off: Citation revenue

What is the annual revenue to the city generated from citations given by law enforcement officers?

In 2012, Lawrence Municipal Court reports it collected $3,135,244, including criminal and traffic fines ($2,324,456), parking fines ($341,028) and overtime parking fines ($469,760), according to Megan Gilliland, communications manager for the city. These figures are preliminary, Gilliland said, and won’t be finalized until an annual audit.

And how much does it cost to run the meter maid program?

Maid? I bet the guys who write parking tickets don't like being called maids any more than the women do.

on yessss..the m word is so offensive and with such a violent history too. However, it is common in our society that women are called "you guys" without objection while guys are called girls to demean them.

That's quite an income from the fines. Thought the meters would be higher percentage of that income though. What amount of the increased meter fees which was approved a few years ago is applied to the funding our LPD police officers?

i think we need to find a way to ramp up these fines, they seem rather paltry for a town this size. after all why not reward the folks that behave with income from the folks that dont? oh never mind, that isnt how it is supposed to work, you takes from the folks that got it and gives it to the folks that dont. .thats the american way, hope and change you know
