Sound Off: Police on bikes

If it’s fair weather, do the city police still ride bicycles? And what is the average miles per gallon of a police car?

Megan Gilliland, the city’s communications manager, provided this information: Officers do occasionally ride bicycles on patrol. This usually occurs during special events or at other times where adequate staffing exists and their use would be advantageous. According to 2012 data, the 39 Crown Victoria police patrol cars average 8.6 MPG, and the eight Ford Interceptors average 11.7 MPG.

911, Yes, what is your emergency? It is 3 am and there is someone breaking into my house. Thank you we will have an officer in route, stay on the phone til they get there, it should take them about 45 minutes since they are on bicycles.
