Sound Off: Recycling dumpsters

How much income does the Lawrence school district receive for the recycling Dumpsters that are on school property?

Lawrence school district finance director Kathy Johnson said the schools provide recycling containers as part of their educational program, school recycling efforts and as a community service. After the recycling companies cover their costs, the schools receive a quarterly commission of excess revenue. During the 2011-12 school year, total revenue from Deffenbaugh Industries was $1,855 across district schools. GT Enterprise Inc. revenue was $105. Johnson said the district does not track any revenues paid to elementary parent organizations that sponsor recycling containers.
