Sound Off: Whom can I get in touch with about the trash that’s left at the bus stop in front of my home?

Bus stops are cleaned on a weekly or twice-a-week basis, depending on use, according to Megan Gilliland, the city’s communications manager. Contact the Transit Administrative Office at 832-3465 to report an area that needs attention.

Perhaps you should get in touch with your hands and a trash can!

If the author is unfortunate enough to be stuck with a bus stop in front of their house, they shouldn't be responsible for cleaning it. As inconsiderate as most people are, I don't blame them for complaining...it probably becomes a local dump site for cigarette butts and other garbage.

This question must be made up. Everyone knows that those who ride the bus, those who choose to lower their carbon footprint, those who hold the earth in highest esteem ... would never trash mother nature.

Unless it's those kids on the lawn again:

There are pigs everywhere. We live by a football stadium. Our back fence line looks like the Hamm landfill some weekends. It lays there for days. People are so considerate of others when they leave their rubbish for others to deal with. Personally I think they should be shot like the feral hogs that they are.

OTOH, if I pay for a ticket, and go to the game, and when its time to throw my trash away, the cans are overflowing, the school can take care of the problem. It happens frequently. We pay exorbitant amounts of money for tickets, refreshments, etc, already, I think some of that cost should go to stadium cleanup by the university.

I remember that at least in the past, groups could make money cleaning up after a basketball game. Some groups would do this as their way of raising funds for some project or trip they wanted to take. I never knew the details, but I would assume something like that may still exist. I have no idea what they do for football games.

Same system for football, but more groups can participate.

Dear LJW, squirrels keep burying their nuts in my yard and leave their empty shells scattered throughout the neighborhood, which then decompose. When is the city going to do something this?

Sincerely,

thebcman, I think you should rethink your comment. This may be an elderly or disabled person that cannot or should not be out picking up someone's trash.

Well if they are in that bad a shape odds are that they may use the para-transit system. All the individual needs to do is tell that bus driver about the problem, and that driver can tell the empTy administration to go out there and clean it up. If they are paid to work a full day, they might as well have something to do.

If on the other hand they are not that bad off, then perhaps they could look at the bright side. Sometimes you can find a lot of aluminum cans discarded. You could make a little money taking out the cans -- not to mention doing something good for the environment.

Put some of that yellow construction tape around the shelter, and place a written notice that the city has closed this bus shelter, the patron's should move on to the next but stand.

Years ago Lady Byrd Johnson (First Lady to Lyndon) had a campaign to Beautify America. Part of her message was don't make someone else pick up your trash. Leave it in the car or on your person, until you find a proper place to put it. A bus stop or yard or street or parking lot or storm drain is NOT the proper place. A trash can is!

Actually I have noticed trash is more prevalent wherever you are. Why is that? Wait till you take a drive across central Missouri.

When I was kid, wayward juveniles like myself, were used to clean areas like this. Hand out yellow vests to those who get speeding or MIP tickets and let them help keep Lawrence clean. Maybe that's now considered "harsh" punishment but our neighborhood was always clean and tidy.

Contact Dillons and ask if they sell garbage bags. If they do, go buy some and go pick it up yourself. It's in front of your house and it bothers you. I pick up trash from the street in front of my house and I don't see a difference.

Do you people need the government to do everything for you?

In a related matter, does anyone know who you are supposed to call to flush the toilet after using it?

Hey City of Lawrence, do something about the guy who raids my apartment dumpster for aluminum. I don't like the idea of someone digging through our trash and finding discarded credit card offers or personal information.
