Sound Off: When recycling plastic bottles, should the lids be removed?

According to the Lawrence department of Waste Reduction and Recycling, you can leave the caps on plastic jugs and bottles when recycling.

I heard from a friend who works for the Shawnee County refuse dept, that pizza boxes that come in are NOT recycled because of the 'food product' stuck to them - is that wasteful or what!? Can somebody verify and explain this!?

It's not wasteful. The grease that has soaked into the cardboard ruins the batch of recycled cardboard that it gets mixed in with. The best thing to do with pizza boxes is to tear off the (presumably non-greasy) top of the box for recycling, then thrown away the bottom.

Sorry, but Clovis's First Law of Recycling says "If part of it has to go into the trash, then all of it goes into the trash."

You're telling me that with all the bleaching and chemical agents added to the pulp/slurry during reprocessing, that there's not something in there (or could be added) like a detergent that removes the grease? How does it "ruin the batch"?

I'm trusting that the lids were removed at least once or you'd be doing the cart before the horse thing with the recycling.

I'll toss the caps, but I'm not pryin' off those flippin* o-rings.
