Sound Off: Can I give blood any day without waiting for a blood drive?
Unfortunately, no. There are no walk-in centers in Lawrence, according to community health leaders. The Kansas City, Mo.-based Community Blood Center closed its walk-in center in Lawrence in September 2009 because of lack of donations. Since then, it has held a blood drive nearly once a week in Lawrence. For the schedule or to make an appointment, visit savealifenow.org or call 888-647-4040. It does have walk-in centers in nearby cities: • Overland Park — Times Square Shopping Center, 10568 Metcalf Ave., 913-383-6800. • Topeka — 800 SW Lane, 785-233-0195. The American Red Cross also has blood drives in Lawrence. For the schedule or to make an appointment, visit redcross.org or call 800-733-2767.

Are you planning on running out of blood sooner than the next blood drive?
Seriously, it seems as if one should be able to give whenever the spirit moves. Hospital, Red Cross, whatever. Kudos to you for your donating spirit.
