Sound Off: I noticed Free State was going to have to play its playoff game at Shawnee Mission West on Friday. How do they determine where those games are played?
Although Free State received the top seed on its side of the bracket in the Class 6A state football playoffs, and the Firebirds beat Shawnee Mission West 28-14 in the regular season, the Firebirds have to play at the SMW home field — Shawnee Mission South District Stadium — for the state semifinals at 7 p.m. Friday. The Kansas State High School Activities Association mandates that the number of times a school has hosted a playoff round this season is the first factor in determining a host site. Because Free State had home games in each of the first two rounds and SMW had only hosted in the opening round, Shawnee Mission West gets to host the semifinal.

Absolutely ridiculous rule. What's the point of playing all of the regular season games and getting the top seed if not for home field advantage. Leave it to KSHSAA to come up with this. It's not alone however; it has plenty of company. There are many equally as silly rules.
