Sound Off: What is being built in front of the Walmart on Iowa Street?
A site plan has been approved for a 5,862-square-foot retail building with two tenants: a fast-order restaurant and a general retail sales use, according to Roger Steinbrock of the city’s marketing division.

I can't think of what we need more than another cell phone store that generates practically zero daily customer traffic.

That's odd, every time I go to the AT&T store on 23rd I have to wait at least half an hour because it's always packed.....always!! It would be refreshing to have another location to handle some of that overflow.

Guess I'm used to the Sprint, T-Mobile, and AT&T stores all on 6th in NW Lawrence. I've never seen more than one person in any of them, and they're usually empty.

Why the vague answer, is it a secret?

===================================================
It is a secret because the "restaurant" is actually going to be a state financed cafeteria for those people working on the SLT to be able to get their meals and get their thermoses filled with coffee. Word is they'll be supplying cigarettes to those workers that smoke as well.
The "shop" is actually going to be a tool crib where whatever necessary tools are needed for whatever particular jobs can be checked out as needed. The building will be guarded 24 hours a day by National Guard troops to prevent sabotage from the likes of, well we know who. The cafeteria will be available to them as well.

There will be a bar. Road building is thirsty work. Especially when they get to digging up the swamp.
