Sound Off: What does parking and transit at KU do with $6.2 million in parking revenue for the year? That’s a lot of money.
KU Parking and Transit Director Donna Hultine offered this breakdown of expenses for the department during the 2011-12 fiscal year: $1.5 million went toward transit functions; $1.4 million went to bond principal and interest payments on the park and ride lots and the Mississippi Street parking garage; $1.25 million paid for salaries and benefits for employees; $1.1 million was devoted to other operating expenses, including snow removal, lighting for parking lots and maintenance of lots; $700,000 went toward capital improvements; and $260,000 went toward an overhead assessment.

Driving through most of the parking lots feels like off-roading.

Especially the surface lot between the Allen Field house garage and the Engineering Building! Every 6 months some guys come out for about 4 hours to patch a fraction of the holes and then leave. Some of the larges pits are actually against the curbs when you pull into the spaces, but they would probably need to come in on the weekend to fill those, which has never happened.
