Sound Off

Sound Off: What happened to the hummingbirds this year? We haven’t seen them this year, as we have in previous years.

If you ask Town Peterson, Kansas University curator of ornithology, the birds have probably just moved a couple blocks down the street. Peterson said there has been no decrease of the hummingbird population in the Lawrence area. He believed a change in planting patterns probably caused the lack of hummingbirds in your area. It might be that another neighborhood has more tasty-looking red and orange flowers — colors that attract hummingbirds. Peterson suggested planting a yard full of flowers hummingbirds like, such as butterfly bush and trumpet vine, to bring back the avian acrobats. He also said hummingbird feeders filled with sugar water would help.
