Sound Off: Why isn’t the water fountain on at the levee on the north side of the Kansas River, just over the bridge?

Meagan Gilliland, the city’s communications manager, provided this answer: The water fountain at that location has two bowls — a lower bowl that is ADA compliant and an upper bowl. The upper bowl is not operational now but parts are on order to fix the water fountain. The lower bowl is operational.

Phone actually. But I'm not complaining of amenities not working. I love The United States of 'Murica and all of its broken fountains. I'm glad I don't live in a third world country where I'd have to worry about silly things like starving, civil war, or genocide.

Time to go drive my car home to my air conditioned house and eat food prepared on my stove. Probably sit in my recliner and watch some tv. Man we have a tough life when the good stuff breaks, like fountains.

I did some futher inquiry; and as Paul Harvey would say "now the rest of the story". I appears that the real reason(s), and there are two, is related to the drought like conditions this Spring and the resulting low water flow in the Kaw! The most important reason apparently is related to maintaining enough water flowing at the dam to allow passage of carp through the dam area on their spring migration run. Since Kansas does not have spawning salmon population, it is important that we have a comparable fish of sport and quality to call our own. The other reason, one that has not occurred in the past but will likely be an annual re-occurring event is related to maintaining enough flow at the dam to operate the hydroelectric units. Prior to construction of the new North side units, there was enough flow to operate the South units; now all has changed. The City determined that by closing down the North side drinking fountains, just enough water would be conserved to prevent the above mentioned problems, so to avoid thist and dehydration, please remember to bring bottled water! Also, if you need a pick-me-up, Johnnie's has been known to have some cool ones on tap and in bottles!, Best wishes!

By-the-way, this is not the real Paul Harvey, but as he would say, "Good day".
