Sound Off

Sound Off: How long do opponents of the South Lawrence Trafficway have to file a petition for the U.S. Supreme Court to review the decision of the 10th Circuit Court of Appeals? Is the Supreme Court obligated to hear an appeal of the 10th Circuit Court of Appeals ruling?

A petition must be filed within 90 days of the date of the decision, said Bob Eye, an attorney for plaintiffs in the South Lawrence Trafficway lawsuit. Eye said the Supreme Court is not obligated to take the case on appeal.

They need to give it up and let progress move forward. All the lawsuits have done is delay the project by nearly two decades and increase the construction costs exponentially.

I absolutely agree. They will eventually lose and they know it. The lawyers are making a lot of money out of this and taking advantage of their clients. Let the pavers roll.

It's been decided by the judicial system, repeatedly. Concessions have been made, so neither side can declare total victory. It's time to build it, and with as little disturbance to the surroundings as is reasonably possible.

But if the obstructionist slap the public with frivolous legal filings, it would be interesting to see a classaction countersuit claiming damages to the public good and productivity. And given that malice would now be the only reason for further filings, hopefully the courts would award treble damages.

I quit patronizing places like the Prarie Band Casino a couple of year ago when I found out it was one of the places bankrolling the opposition. My luck gambling had to put a dent into their extra money.

Might be a good thing to do to quit supporting places that support the opposition.

Call it what you want, I moved to another casino if it is any of your business.

Are you being serious with that comment? How, in any way, was that racist?

Phoghorn 5 years, 5 months ago

There are two general situations in which a charge of racism is levied. The first is when discriminatory action has occurred. The second is when somebody knows they have lost an argument. Clearly 3of5's charge falls into the latter.

You're a deep thinker. I quit patronizing the Prairie Band Casino because it blows.

The SCOTUS isn't taking a case where the party lost to a unanimous verdict by a 3 judge panel on every single count. This case is dead.

Now the greatest threat to the road is Sam Brownback's fiscal irresponsibility.

The evitinmentalists might yet win, and in the most ironic of fashions.,

Some people still believe an expensive and obsolete design is not pork barrel for the real estate executives?

Cars are mostly empT yet can somehow demand $200-$300 million tax dollars for their convenience. So this is yet another form of pork barrel.

Then come the millions for maintenance and snow removal.

This should be a toll road that will cover 100% of expenses. Wait till voters discover a local tax increase will be attached to this project ....... in addition to all of the others on the table.

What we need is a common-sense solution for getting traffic around Lawrence. That solution is not the SLT. We need an elevated road (similar to K-4) that connects I-70 and K-10 where they are closest (just east of Lawrence). The circuitous route taken by the SLT is simply someone's bad idea from way back when that never got properly challenged. But the eastern bypass takes a different approach - I call it the East Lawrence Connector. It would be a fraction of the length of the SLT and it would get people where they want to go in a fraction of the time. Will it solve all the problems on 23rd? No. But the SLT's not gonna do that either. The EAST LAWRENCE CONNECTOR: its time has come!

littlexav 5 years, 5 months ago

I would love to see this; but realistically, it doesn't match the growth/traffic patterns that they would want the SLT to exploit. And they've already spent millions on the SLT. Plus all the emotions wrapped up in the victory... they'd never abandon it. Too bad; the eastern connection is a really great idea!

JackMcKee 5 years, 5 months ago

This is just stupid. What's needed is a way to route K-10 traffic around Lawrence, not a way to funnel more K-10 traffic onto I-70.

JackMcKee 5 years, 5 months ago

Which is why the route proposed by the Plaintiffs was so ineffective. By the time you drove that far South you'd save no more time than if you had just waddled through Lawrence on 23rd Street. This fight was a weird confluence of dissimilar parties with dissimilar goals but with the same deluded desired outcome. The environmentalists should be pleased that the lost wetlands have been mitigated 5 times over. The anti-growth crowd, well they are just a bunch of obstructionists. Who cares if they're happy, they never had a legitimate argument in the first place. I'm sorry the native Americans have to hear traffic, the SW Traffic way runs a half mile from my back yard. It won't be nearly as bad as they envision.

In the end, this was a monumental waste of money and resources and these people should be ashamed of themselves.

There is nothing uglier then a flyover bypass, usually underneath it is full of trash, etc...see Wichita. Bad idea at to high a cost.

littlexav 5 years, 5 months ago

Oh, please. You can check on google maps - the "wetlands" that they are trying to protect are obviously being used as cropland.

You wonder how idiots like brownbackwards get elected and then you read some of the comments in this forum. The mystery is then clearly solved.

JackMcKee 5 years, 5 months ago

I know a lot of people that are in favor of the SLT that are adamantly opposed to Sam Brownback.

There, fixed it for you.
