Sound Off

Sound Off: The newly completed building at Ninth and New Hampshire includes a narrow section of sidewalk enclosed by low brick walls (on Ninth Street, east of the alley). Does the width of this section meet code and accessibility standards?

Megan Gilliland, the city’s communications manager, provided this information: The sidewalk in question complies with ADA regulations, which require sidewalks to be a minimum of 36 inches wide. The sidewalk measures 40 inches and reflects what is shown on the approved site plan. Additionally, the area in question has detectable warnings that warn a person with sight impairment that a curb ramp is upon them.

And the curb ramp was required by ADA regs, not the developer.
