Sound Off: Firefighters and ambulances

Why, when an ambulance is called to a person’s home for transport to the hospital, are firefighters required to attend? Does having so many people in attendance increase the patient’s costs?

The severity of an emergency call determines the response. In some cases, calls require a high level of care, which include emergency medical services and fire apparatuses. The reason for the fire department’s attendance is to provide a high level of care to the patient, Jim King, prevention division chief at Lawrence Fire Medical said. He said that the number of people providing care does not affect the cost. The fire department’s arrival is paid for by taxpayers.
