Sound Off: Does Lawrence have any free or low-cost transportation for seniors who are in wheelchairs and need to get to and from physical therapy appointments?

Brenda Brown, director of development and marketing for Independence Inc., a Lawrence nonprofit that provides assistance to people with disabilities, provided the following options: • Independence Inc., 843-5576. It offers transportation from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays for a donation of $2 per ride. Medical trips to Kansas City and Topeka also are available at an additional cost. There are no age restrictions. • Douglas County Senior Center, 865-6925. It offers transportation from  7:15 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays for residents 60 or older. Cost is $3 per ride. It also offers rides to Eudora and Lecompton.  • City of Lawrence’s T-Lift, 864-5438. It offers services from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday for $2 per ride.  • MTM Kansas Medical Transportation Program, 888-240-6497. It offers nonemergency medical transportation for the state’s Medicaid program.

I have a friend who is home bound and uses this mode of transportation as often as she can. While the $2 cost is minimal, the need is so great that it is very hard to schedule rides when they are needed. At times, to keep her doctor appointments, she has had to resort to using other more costly rides from companies who charge as much as $200 and up. A town as big as Lawrence needs to increase the number of vehicles available at Independence Inc. to help keep these cost lower for people who must depend on rides.

No they don't, these people can ask their family members or friends to help them out. I am not being cruel. We are hellbent on making people dependent upon governmental services for most all their needs. This has to stop.

I hope you always have a lot of friends and family members who are willing and able to help you out, A lot of folks don't.

That is not my problem or yours either. How generous many are with other peoples hard earned cash.

You should go to a place like Calcutta. No doubt your heart would be warmed by the elderly, mentally ill and small children literally dying in the streets. Because your ideal view of this country carves out space for this type of neglect and unconcern for humanity you should go enjoy the stench of human death for a while, feel the beauty of not concerning yourself with the well-being and dignity of the those among us who could use a hand. I hope to God you do not consider yourself Christian, because it is obvious you do not believe in the tenants of our Lord, Jesus Christ. You believe in the false idol of politics and dogmatic nationalism, humanity be damned. God have mercy on your soul for believing in human abstraction rather than those who were created by God.

Right, because these people haven't paid taxes their whole lives.

Family member need to go to work, they have children to transport, they have to do their own shopping, etc. Same thing with friends. If we are going to look at people purely in the sense of what they produce, and how much money they have, we are missing several points. Preventive care and ongoing care does save money down the road. Of course this is irrelevant, but it also makes the disabled or poor person feel better to have their pain managed.
The mentally ill, whether they have some place to live or are homeless, would benefit from therapy and meds from Bert Nash. But, first they have to get there. Older people have varying degrees of difficulty in getting around. Some don't drive anymore. Last, but certainly not least. "Love one another as I have loved you." Trivia? question, who said that?

Lawrence will pick you up in your very own limo/empty bus. Just call the reservation hotline.

IF you have family who happen to have vehicles with wheelchair lifts I am sure they are more than willing to oblige. Otherwise, someone with an equipped vehicle needs to take them, or we need doctors, dentists, and related medical providers to make regular home visits.

FYI - My home bound friend is in a wheelchair and lives in the country. She cannot drive due to her health issues. Independence Inc. does come to pick her up, she qualifies as a Douglas County resident. And she pays the required fee, yes it is minimal. I have learned how hard it can be on people who have health issues, both from this friend and my father who went from house bound, to assisted living, then full nursing care before he passed away. I only hope these services stay around for those who need them. When sick people have no relatives to help, or must have vans to help with wheelchairs, these rides are their lifelines to healthcare. I hope you critics of this service never have to call on this service for yourselves or your loved ones. It is not fun at all to try to schedule these rides with the nasty lady at the desk. She sure has a chip on her shoulder for sure, should not be in the health field.
