Sound Off: Is it illegal to drive around the city with your bright lights on and your fog lights on?

Megan Gilliland, the city’s communications manager, provided this information: Kansas law requires drivers to dim high-beam headlights when approaching an oncoming vehicle from a distance of 500 feet or less, or when approaching a vehicle from behind at a distance of 300 feet or less.

Isn't it impossible to drive with high beams and fog lamps?

If they are wired properly, you are right. Most people don't know where to tap the hot wirw so they work independent of the headlights.

fog lights? This person sounds like a real peach.

I keep my high beam on during the day when I ride my motorcycle.

Please don't! " Kansas law requires drivers to dim high-beam headlights when approaching an oncoming vehicle from a distance of 500 feet or less, or when approaching a vehicle from behind at a distance of 300 feet or less."

Sorry no can do. Actually I'm not sorry as I'll do whatever it takes to try to make myself more visible to other drivers.

Having the high beam on means you're blinding people so they can't see you or pedestrians.

hipper_than_hip 2 years, 4 months ago

No I guarentee they can see my 100W high beam in the daytime.

If you do that to a cop, he may flash his lights at you and if you do not dim them, you will get a ticket. I promise.

I've never been blinded by a motorcycle and I'm glad you are making yourself visible.

gccs14r 2 years, 4 months ago

I can tell you that I've put a hand up to block extremely bright oncoming lights. Do you want that to be you that I'm no longer looking at? And if you cause an accident from running a non-DOT headlight, you'll be broke for a very long time.

You are so cool and to hell with all others.

acedlm 2 years, 4 months ago

so many drivers don't see motorcycles as it is, and it's much more serious for them to be in an accident so I agree, use high beams whenever you want!

Is it legal to use your high beams if you are driving in a swimming pool?

ferrislives 2 years, 4 months ago

I don't know about other cars, but my car won't allow the high beams and fog lights to be on at the same time. It's one or the other. And of course you can turn your fog lights off and have regular head lights as well.

I can't stand when someone leaves their high beams (not fog lights) on as I'm passing them, but this sound-off guy just sounds like a complainer.

I very much enjoy Christina Hendricks's "high beams" Rock on!

If I am going to be blinded, This is the way to go.

Have to form a committee and run it past the historic resources commission.

Forget the headlights. I am tired of honking at people to move on at a green light because their face is in their I phone.
