Sound Off

Sound off: Is there any place in Lawrence that would help senior citizens do their income tax for free?

Yes. Free tax assistance is available to residents ages 60 and older and those with low to moderate incomes at the Lawrence Senior Center through the AARP Foundation Tax-Aide program. Sarah Merriman, district coordinator for the program, said volunteers are offering assistance through April 17, this year’s tax deadline, at the center, 745 Vt. Instead of providing services on a walk-in basis only, they are scheduling appointments. To make an appointment, call 856-0365 between noon and 3 p.m. Monday through Thursday. The program is providing tax assistance from noon to 4 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and from 9 a.m. to noon Saturdays.

If a senior citizen doesn't have enough money to hire an accountant, then they probably don't have a very complicated tax form anyway, so even "the evil AARP" couldn't mess it up. Geez, bring politics into everything. Do some of you people never talk to a family member or neighbor if they support the president of the United States and our government. Some patriots you are, but I'll bet you have a flag decal.

AARP volunteers help seniors but it is suggested to call and make an appointment. They do take walk-ins too. They also take those under 65 that have a low to moderate income.

They are very good.

Per the LJWorld, AARP has a free program that assists seniors with preparing their tax returns. I hope this helps!

Yes. The Senior Center

Also, there are a number of free tax preparation sites on the IRS web site. You can do your Federal return for free but there is about a $9.00 charge for the state returns.

I have used these for 4 years now and my refund has been in my bank account in about 2-3 weeks.
