How do substitutes’ salaries in the Lawrence school district compare with larger school districts like Shawnee Mission and Blue Valley? When was their last raise, and how much was it?
The Lawrence district last increased substitute salaries in September 2008 to $95 per day, a $3 increase. Substitutes also may earn incentives of $200 to $400 per year for working a qualifying number of Fridays; typically 50 substitutes per year earn such incentive payments. “Substitutes are a highly valued and integral part of the educational delivery system in the Lawrence public schools,” said David Cunningham, the district’s director of human resources, legal services and policy. “Although we’ve made some progress, the district is not where we’d like to be in terms of substitute salaries.” Daily pay rates for certified substitutes in other area districts, according to Cunningham: Kansas City, Kan., $132.60; Blue Valley, $129; Leavenworth, $122; Shawnee Mission and Spring Hill, $120; Olathe, $112; Bonner Springs, $110; De Soto, Tonganoxie and Lansing, $100; Eudora, $90; Topeka, $85.
