Some recent Journal-World articles have referenced a DNA database for solving old crimes. How does someone end up in the database?
The national database that collects DNA profiles is the Combined DNA Index System, commonly referred to as CODIS. Who ends up in the database varies by state law, but in Kansas, anyone arrested for a felony — as well as selected misdemeanors — has their DNA profile added to the database.
