My question is regarding Allen Fieldhouse. I know where the “Allen” comes from, but where does the “fieldhouse” come from? Why not Allen Arena, or something like that?
Warren Corman, KU’s recently retired university architect, was on the design team for Allen Fieldhouse when it was built. He said Allen Fieldhouse, like Ahearn Fieldhouse at Kansas State, was built not just for basketball, but to host indoor track and field events, as well. A basketball court used to sit three feet on top of the clay, Corman said, and track and field events would use the space all winter. Though the clay was eventually replaced with concrete, the “fieldhouse” name was retained to respect tradition.
