Sound Off

According to Friday’s paper, Thursday’s low was minus 16 degrees. Is that a record low for Feb. 10? If so, what year was the previous low and what was the low for that day?

According to Jennifer Bowen, meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Topeka, minus 16 degrees was the official record in Lawrence for Feb. 10. But the NWS has had an official station only since 2005. Before that, all information was based on an observer on Kansas University campus. The record from that location, which is not official, was minus 6 degrees in 1899.
