Many times after an accident, the Lawrence Journal-World reports that the victims were transported to other area hospitals instead of Lawrence Memorial. A recent local accident showed one person transported to Kansas City and another went to Topeka and neither was believed to have life-threatening injuries. Is Lawrence Memorial Hospital not equipped to deal with these kinds of emergencies?
Janice Early, LMH spokeswoman, said the hospital doesn’t make the decision about where accident victims are transported. She said it is determined by Lawrence-Douglas County Fire Medical. Early said LMH does not have neurosurgeons who can treat head trauma. Mark Bradford, fire chief, said the department transports to specialty care facilities based on injury and illness. “In most cases, we transport patients where they want to go,” he added.
