At one time there was talk of making the historic Grover Barn/fire station into and Underground Railroad museum. It seems a shame for that building to sit empty. Are their plans by Freedom’s Frontier or others to make use of this important Bleeding Kansas era structure?
As of yet, there is interest but no definite plans, Judy Sweets of the Underground Railroad Association of Douglas County wrote in an email. The organization submitted plans to the city in 2006, but the proposal was tabled. She does not know of any further action by the city on that front. She added that the barn remains an important part of history, where John Brown led 11 freed slaves and a newborn baby before they escaped to freedom in Canada. “This was Brown’s last trip to Kansas before his execution for his part in the Harpers Ferry insurrection,” wrote Sweets.
