This question is regarding last Sunday’s and Monday’s stories and Wednesday's editorial about the questionable charity in Tonganoxie. How can we get information about the charities we give to and what percent actually gets to the desired destination? Is there an objective watchdog group that provides this kind of information?
The nonprofit watchdog organization GuideStar collects the IRS forms for many nonprofits across the country. The forms provide a detailed summary of how much money a charity collects and how much goes to actual services. A searchable database is available on their website, guidestar.org, but users must set up a free account with the site to search.
