How did the schools select Wednesday for the half-day of school? Why wasn’t Friday picked? It would have seemed more logical.
The Lawrence school district implemented staff collaboration time in 1998. “Lawrence elementary and junior high schools are dismissed 90 minutes early on Wednesdays,” said Julie Boyle, the district’s communications director. “This provides common planning time for professional staff to meet educational goals that have a direct impact on student learning. The high schools use late-arrival days for collaboration. “Staff who were with the district at the time of implementation recall that Wednesdays were discussed as anchor points for the week and days that rarely conflicted with other school events, holiday breaks, conference days, etc. There were concerns expressed at that time that shortened school days on Fridays might be viewed as expendable.”
