Why do the Lawrence public schools require one extra semester of social studies than the state requires? That’s one less elective for all of our students.

“During the 2004-05 school year, the Lawrence public schools worked to realign its social studies curriculum in response to newly adopted Kansas Social Studies Standards and a new Kansas Social Studies Assessment,” said Ron May, the district’s social studies curriculum specialist. “A district social studies committee recommended adding a required, one-semester Modern World History course to better meet the needs of students in preparation for meeting state standards and state assessment expectations. The Lawrence Board of Education approved the change in graduation requirements. “As a part of (the district’s) Redesign for Student Success initiative, a committee is reviewing the current 6-12 social studies curriculum. This group will provide recommendations to ensure continued student success in social studies with the implementation of 6-8 middle schools and four-year high schools beginning next fall.”
