Why does the Lawrence school district’s classes start so early, more than a week before Kansas University’s classes?

Julie Boyle, a school district spokeswoman, said classes have started during the second full week of August since 2000. The district has a calendar committee made up of teachers, school staff and administrators that makes a recommendation to the school board. “The committee seeks a calendar that provides optimum instructional time for students, meets the requirements stipulated by the Kansas State Board of Education, and takes into consideration such things as parent-teacher conference time, professional staff development and additional teacher contract days as well as family vacation and holiday needs,” Boyle said.
