How many inches of snow equals one inch of rain?

The ratio of snow to rain is what makes forecasting snow amounts difficult, said 6News Meteorologist Matt Elwell. A typical ratio is 10 inches of snow to 1 inch of rain, he said. But it can vary as much as from 3 to 5 inches of snow to 1 inch of water to — on rare occasions in an extremely cold system — 20 inches of snow to 1 inch of water.
