Why does the Lawrence Journal-World and others continue to call the games between KU-MU Border Wars? War is War (i.e. fighting, shooting, killing and bloodshed). Other stations call it the Border Showdown. Please stop calling it a war.
The rivalry always had been known as the Border War until a sponsorship-driven branding change before the 2005 game. Its official name is the “M&I Bank Border Showdown,” but the Journal-World sports department continues to call the game the “Border War,” just as it referred to the Orange Bowl that KU won in 2008 as the Orange Bowl, instead of the FedEx Orange Bowl. I believe that our readers can distinguish the gravity of a real war from a football game and don’t think that causes any confusion. Plus, given that the intense feelings between the two states date to pre-Civil War conflicts, I believe “Border War” captures the history of the oldest continuous football rivalry west of the Mississippi better than the “M&I Bank Border Showdown.” — Tom Keegan, sports editor

Tom, the title and the one paragraph are a little confusing. Do you want it to be called the Border War or the Border Showdown? It seemed like you changed your view halfway through.

Surely there is something more politically correct we can call this . . . .
Oops, didn't mean to call you "Shirley", Tom.

I'm more concerned about the verb disagreement in the headline. That's really putting a twist in my shorts.

KU/MU Border Conflict has a more civil feel to it.

We could call it the 'border disagreement', makes no difference to me what it's called. Don't care. I have friends from Missouri and travel over there several times a year and we agree: it's nothing personal. Except, when we play Mizzery in anything, stomp them into a mudhole and feed them cheap dogfood. . . . Next.
