It is legal to have an open fire in your back yard at night? If not, whom would I call?

Rich Barr, Lawrence-Douglas County Fire Marshal, answered, “Typically, ‘recreational fires’ include campfires (no larger than 3 foot by 3 foot by 2 foot), chimineas, outdoor fireplaces, etc. As a recreational fire, it is permissible to conduct burning after sunset. However, in the case of a campfire, if it is not enclosed in an appliance or contained it would require a permit from the Fire Medical Department. If it is a bonfire, defined as an open fire greater than 3 foot by 3 foot by 2 foot in size, then it is prohibited unless a special permit is obtained, which is fairly rare.” He added, “We would encourage observers of fires, if they are unsure, to contact 911 so that a response can be made to determine the circumstances.”
