Sound Off

Was the fire crew that responded to the accident on U.S. Highway 24-40 near the airport the crew from North Lawrence, or did they come from downtown?

Fire crews that responded to the Aug. 25 injury accident at U.S. Highway 24-40 and East 1500 Road did not come from North Lawrence, said Lisa Patterson, city spokeswoman. Though the city has positioned a fire engine and crew in North Lawrence during a major reconstruction project at North Second and Locust streets, the crew is only on standby from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. and from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Because the accident occurred at 9:40 a.m., the standby crew was not available to respond, Patterson said. Instead, crews from the downtown station and the station on West Sixth Street responded.
