How many people die from flu every year in the United States?

According to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, about 36,000 people die each year from flu-related causes. According to the Kansas Department of Health and Environment, 2,015 people in the state died during the 2007-2008 season, which runs from September through May, from influenza or pneumonia. Of those, 1,297 were because pneumonia or influenza was a contributing factor, 51 were because influenza was the direct cause of death, and 667 were because pneumonia was the direct cause of death.
