Sound Off

I’ve lived in my neighborhood for over 10 years. It was a beautiful and quiet neighborhood until my neighbors put in a pool. The pool’s motors make so much noise that we’ve lost the enjoyment of our patio and deck. What is a pool owner’s responsibility to not reduce the enjoyment of other people’s property nearby?

A properly functioning pump motor for a residential swimming pool should emit a minimal amount of noise, according to Megan Gilliland, communications manager for the city of Lawrence, so your neighbors’ may not be functioning properly. Mechanical equipment is typically exempt from the provisions of the city’s ordinance on disturbing the peace, unless the equipment is in need of repair or is not operating properly.
