Why does the county send out two mailings, one the real estate tax information sheet and another the property tax bill? Why does the real estate tax information sheet contain an empty envelope?
Douglas County Treasurer Paula Gilchrist said the county is required by law to send out real estate tax information sheets to homeowners who might have a mortgage company pay the property taxes on their home. It is a courtesy to let them know the amounts of their valuation and taxes, she said. Gilchrist said if those homeowners also receive a property tax bill, it is because they own personal property in the county, such as boats. She said the printing company, Mail Services, that sent out the real estate tax information sheets last week erroneously included an empty envelope. No reply is necessary, she said. “It is nothing the county will be paying for,” Gilchrist said. “It is a mistake that our printer made.”
